This illustrated skull is an accurate, to scale depiction of a Homo sapiens skull dated 200,000 years BCE.
It seems fitting that the clay body each plate is made out of comes from the earth just like the fossil skull illustrated on it. Imagine what it would be like to unearth a hominin fossil in the wild some day. Fantastic! That will be a great day for sure but until then you can dig in and bring this one home right now.
- This heavyweight ceramic plate is 12 inches (30.48 cm) in diameter. It has a nice solid feel in the hand.
- I use two colors of ceramic glazes to paint in the background and border on both sides of the plate.
- Then the illustrated skull is hand painted on the front with ceramic glazes, once that is dry the plate is signed on the back.
- Several coats of a clear glaze (dinnerware safe) is applied to both sides giving the plates a rich, lustrous look.
- The plate is then fired to 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit, making it a durable and lasting artifact just for you.

These beautiful early man fossil skull plates are expertly hand painted one at a time by me on bisque fired plates in my studio and then fired again in my own kiln. I do not use decals or stencils. These heavyweight plates are 12 inches (30.48 cm) in diameter and are durable enough for everyday use. They are all food safe because I use non-toxic underglazes and glazes. The plates are microwave and dishwasher safe also.
I use the exact same color glazes on each plate. If you see any differences in the pictures as it relates to color that is from the photographic process and not because they are slightly different in color.
Bisque fired ceramic clay means the plates have been fired once which provides a hard, white porous surface to paint on with underglazes and glazes. Once I have finished painting on each piece it is fired again to give it a shiny glass finish.
These plates radiate 'Charm'. That charm comes from the fact I create them one at a time with love and attention. That charm is manifested in the slight variations and imperfections each plate will have from one to the other. When you hold these plates in your hands you can just feel the difference between some factory mass produced product and the warmth of these original works of art.
These unique hand painted ceramic plates win the admiration of family and friends alike. They are a joy to own and display.
